Naming BQ Datasets after M-Lab Measurement Services & Data Types

Earlier this year, M-Lab published blog post outlining our new ETL pipeline and transition to new BigQuery tables. That post also outlined where we’ve saved our datasets, tables, and views in BigQuery historically, and recommended tables and views for most researchers to use. At that time we also implemented semantic versioning to new dataset and table releases at that time, and began publishing BigQuery views that unify our NDT data across multiple schema iterations and migrations.

Local Communities are Driving Broadband Speed Mapping in the US

Over the past few years, M-Lab has supported an increasing number of local communities, municipalities, regional coalitions, and others who are interested in understanding the state of broadband service in their area. In every case, communities come to M-Lab because of the openness of our data. Combined with M-Lab’s open source code and community examples, we’ve been able to further support communities in building and running their own broadband measurement test sites and broadband community surveys, to support local outreach, advocacy, and planning.

‘How fast is my Internet?’

It seems like a simple question, but in fact there are several ways to approach the question and no one correct way to answer it. Given that there are so many different methods used to measure Internet speed, it’s not surprising that we get emails asking about people’s Internet connection speeds almost every day. There’s actually an area of academic study around this question — the Internet Measurement Community, which strives to develop scientifically rigorous methodologies that can be used to measure different aspects of Internet connectivity.
